Seeing my story written out like that is a little surreal, because the path that led to publishing my books wasn’t exactly a straight one.

A Writer Long Before I Was an Author

For most of my life, I’ve been a writer.

I wrote for school publications growing up and contributed to local newspapers over the years. Writing has always been something that came naturally to me. But actually publishing books felt like something I might do someday—something that stayed on the “maybe one day” list for a long time.

Then life shifted my perspective.

Over a relatively short period of time, my family went through a number of difficult experiences. We said goodbye to a foster child who had lived in our home for three years, something that was incredibly hard for our whole family. Not long after that, my mother and father-in-law both passed away.

Those losses changed how I looked at time, opportunities, and the things we leave behind.

At some point during that season, my mindset became very simple: it was now or never.

Turning Real Experiences Into Books

That shift is what finally led me to publish my books.

Each one grew out of real experiences and conversations happening in my own life.

Adulting 101 was inspired when my 23-year-old cousin moved in with us after the death of his father. It quickly became clear that many of the everyday life skills people need—managing money, handling responsibilities, solving common problems—had never really been explained to him.

My experience as a foster parent reinforced that realization. I saw firsthand how many young people enter adulthood without the practical skills they need. That became the foundation for the book.

In Case I Die came from a very different place. It was written during a season of grief, but it also explores something people don’t talk about enough: how humor sometimes becomes part of surviving loss. At one point, my husband, cousin, and I jokingly referred to ourselves as the “Dead Parents Society.” It sounds dark, but sometimes laughter is one of the ways people keep moving forward.

Making Waves grew out of the final stages of my own therapy journey. It focuses on something many people struggle with—learning to set boundaries and stop shrinking themselves to keep others comfortable.

Books That Feel Like Conversations

One thing readers often tell me is that my books don’t feel like textbooks.

That’s intentional.

I wanted them to feel more like conversations with a friend—someone who has been through some of the same things and is sharing what they’ve learned along the way.

Why Sharing the Story Matters

Publishing the press release felt like another step in sharing that journey.

My hope has always been that these books help people feel less alone in whatever they’re navigating—whether that’s learning how to handle adult responsibilities, working through grief, or figuring out how to set healthier boundaries in their lives.

Introducing The Life Happens Series

When I wrote my first book, I wasn’t thinking about creating a series.

I’ve always been a writer—working on school newspapers, local papers, and writing whenever I could—but publishing a book took courage I didn’t quite have yet. It wasn’t until I experienced a series of heartbreaking losses, including losing a foster child and several family members, that my perspective shifted.

Suddenly my mindset became “now or never.”

Those experiences led to the publication of In Case I Die, and from there the writing continued with Adulting 101 and Making Waves. Although each book was written for a different reason, they all share a common theme: life doesn’t always go the way we planned.

Why “The Life Happens Series”?

Because life throws a lot at us—sometimes when we least expect it.

Sometimes we’re learning how to navigate the responsibilities of adulthood.

Sometimes we’re coping with grief and loss.

Sometimes we realize we’ve spent too much time trying to please everyone else and need to learn how to set boundaries.

These books were written for those moments.

Books, Bonding, and a 5th-Grade "Hit": My Night with Canyon Estates Book Club

It was such a joy to kick off the week with some of my new favorite people! On Monday, January 19th, I had the absolute pleasure of joining the Canyon Estates Book Club to discuss my memoir, In Case I Die.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when a group of insightful readers gets together to talk about grief, finding joy, and the messy beauty of life, let me tell you—it’s powerful. But at Canyon Estates, it was also a total blast.

Deep Stories and a Surprise Performance

We spent the evening diving into the heart of In Case I Die. It’s always so humbling to hear how my journey through loss and my search for daily joy resonates with others. We spent time sharing deep stories with each other, laughing, and connecting over the shared experiences that make us human.

Then... things took a very fun turn.

I ended up performing a "throwback" that I haven’t thought about in years. I actually sang my 5th-grade original song, "Love is Like a Gun." Yes, you read that right! My ten-year-old self had some very dramatic ideas about romance. Sharing that moment of silliness and nostalgia with the club was the highlight of my night.

The Countdown is On: Why I Finally Decided to Start "Making Waves"

If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be days away from launching a book about stepping into my own power, I probably would have over-analyzed that statement for three hours, wondered if I was being too "loud," and then asked you if you were okay with me writing it.

That is the life of a chronic people-pleaser. But this Friday, January 16, 2026, that chapter officially closes, and a new one begins with the release of my latest book: "Making Waves: From Pleaser to Powerful: Reclaiming Your Boundaries."

Escaping the Mental Maze

Most of my life was spent in a "mental maze." You might know the one—where a single offhand comment from a neighbor or a stranger can send your mind into a tailspin. You replay the conversation, imagine the "perfect" response hours too late, and burn all your energy trying to figure out how to make everyone happy.

I realized that while I was busy trying to keep the waters calm for everyone else, I was drowning in my own life. I was settling for "good enough"—like that roach-infested trailer we first lived in when we moved to Trenton—because I was too afraid to demand the life I actually deserved.

When Redirection Feels Like Rejection

In the book, I share the story of being "kicked to the curb." At the time, our eviction felt like the end of the world. It felt like a failure. But looking back, it was the only way the universe could move us toward the home we eventually bought and the life we’ve built here.

That’s what Making Waves is about. It’s about realizing that sometimes the most "powerful" thing you can do is accept a redirection, find your voice, and trust that the ripples you create will lead you exactly where you need to be.

The Full Circle Moment

One of the most emotional parts of this journey was realizing that the love we poured into our foster son years ago wasn't lost, even when he was moved away. Five years later, he found his way back to us through our business, Trenton Delivers. It was the ultimate proof that when you stop living just to please people and start living to impact them, the universe has a way of bringing those blessings back to your door.

There is something timeless about the smell of a fresh newspaper and the sound of a page turning. Even in 2026, with everything moving at the speed of light online, I still believe there is no better way to get the heartbeat of our community than through the Dade County Sentinel.

This week, I’m especially excited to open the paper because I’ve contributed a piece that has been rattling around in my brain for quite some time.

The Manual We Never Got

We’ve all had that moment—usually while standing in the middle of a grocery store aisle or staring at a pile of paperwork—where we realize that being an "adult" didn't come with a set of instructions. And being an adult in a tight-knit place like Dade County comes with its own unique set of joys and hurdles.

In this article, I dive into the reality of navigating life right here in our corner of Georgia. I talk about the shift from "just getting by" to actually building a life you’re proud of, and what it looks like to find your footing when you feel like you're just winging it.
